2012 Towson vs Johns Hopkins NCAA Lacrosse Highlights – Video

Great highlights from Johns Hopkins 12 to 6 win over Towson which included great goals from Canadians Zach Palmer and Brandon Benn. Both players showed great poise in tight around the net. This is something we expect from Palmer, but it looks like Brandon Bell has some finish inside as well. Good to see Canadians doing so well on Homewood Field.

Junior A Unofficial Draft Results

I pulled off all the draft picks from the Alberta Junior A Twitter feed @ABJrALAX to put together and unofficial 2012 Junior A Draft list. Click here to see the Draft List. All four Junior A teams draft at the same time. The two Calgary teams are allowed to draft only Southern Alberta players and the two Edmonton teams are only allowed to draft Northern Alberta players. The Red Deer players are left out of the initial draft and then drafted as a separate draft. When you see the list you will see the two different drafts.

Vimy Lacrosse was well represented in the draft with 9 former or current students taken out of the 20 picks from the North. Two students, Brendan Kelly and Rob Bartko, were taken first and second overall in the North draft. It was great to see the success of our students and how they are making an impact on Alberta Lacrosse.

Rush vs Roughnecks Highlights – Video

The Rush lost last night to the Calgary Roughnecks 12 to 8 in a very fast and physical game. The Roughnecks scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter to break a 6 to 6 tie and take a lead that they would not relinquish. The goalies on both sides were exceptional with each making numerous point-blank saves. The Rush again struggled with their power play and just could not get into a good rhythm against Calgary’s pressure defense during their 5 on 5 sets. Both teams play the same defensive style, but Calgary’s ball movement was better creating more chances on offense. They also beat Edmonton on a few transition opportunities including some by Geoff Snider who dominated the faceoffs throughout the game. Once you get down to Calgary it is tough to get on a run if you can never win a faceoff.

The Rush need to figure it out especially on the offensive side of the ball. There is no balance on offense. Some players never touch the ball and others are taking way too many shots on net. It needs to improve if the team wants to string some wins together. It will not get easier with the Philadelphia Wings visiting Edmonton for the next game. They will be coming into town with Brodie Merrill, Dan Dawson and Kevin Crowley. At least the game will be at home for the Rush.

Junior B Draft Results

The North Junior B draft took place this week and representatives from the Titans, Warriors and Crude kicked off the 2012 season by bolstering their rosters with new players. All teams are looking for some strong players to come in and make immediate impacts. It is always a difficult to know exactly how it will play out as players decide if they are going to be looking to move to Junior A, Junior B or leaving the sport. It was great to see that the first three picks and 6 out of the 10 first picks have ties to the Vimy Lacrosse Program. It speaks well of what we are trying to accomplish here at the program. Will Paul Rabil Play in Edmonton? – Video

Paul Rabil has been extremely quiet since his trade from Washington to Edmonton. Athan Iannucci, whom Rabil was traded for, has been very visible, even doing an interview for the Stealth. Where is Paul Rabil? His tweets say nothing about Edmonton. What is going on? Will Rabil even suit up for the Rush. They could use his strength, speed and power. Edmonton fans would be very excited to see him. The Calgary game is only days away. Hopefully we hear something soon about Mr. Rabil.

This weekend saw more college teams opening up their regular season schedule, including Towson University. Towson beat Jacksonville University 12 – 10. Highlights from a Towson perspective are below.

If You Missed the Rush Game – Video

Great highlights from the Rush game versus the Minnesota Swarm on Friday night. The Rush lost the game 10-9 in a game that went deep into the overtime period before the Swarm got the deciding goal. The game was a physical affair with big hits and some intense work on loose balls. The Rush did not get enough goals out of their 5 on 5 set, relying on special teams and transition for a bulk of their offense. Their defense played very well and with Bold in net, they stymied the Swarm countless times. What hurt the Rush was their inability to generate offense from their front gate. They scored their 9th goal 5 minutes into the fourth quarter and then did not score a goal for the rest of the game, going a total of 22 minutes without a goal. They played hard, but could not execute when they needed it the most. It only stays difficult for the Rush as their next game is in Calgary against the Roughnecks. With a record of 1- 3 they need a monstrous effort next game.
