Great article on the NLL Insider about the future of Alberta Junior A lacrosse and their inclusion in the Minto Cup.  Click here to read the article.

As someone who is heavily involved in lacrosse in Alberta, I am also concerned about Alberta’s ability to compete at the highest level of Junior A lacrosse.  We are improving dramatically in our minor lacrosse as is evident with the great showing of the Team Alberta Bantam and Midget box teams this past summer.  The questions come in terms of the depth of our talent pool in the province.  Can we develop enough talent in the province to continually fill the four Junior A teams?  Are the Junior B teams doing enough to develop players to move and compete at Junior A?  Are the minor lacrosse associations doing their very best to get children to play the sport, keep them in the sport and develop them in the sport?

I truly believe we are getting better as a province, but we are far from where we need to be.  Our minor lacrosse system needs to improve its coaching across the board and we need to keep players in the sport.  The season is too short and for many children the sport is almost used a “filler” sport.  It is just something to do after hockey and before summer holidays.  I think this attitude must change.  If we do not start to show improvement in the way we develop our athletes we will continue to hear the call from Ontario and BC for Alberta’s removal from the Minto Cup.  That would be a serious blow to the overall growth of the sport in Canada.
