Mitch with his parents celebrating the National Championship

Mitch McAvoy, a local boy from Sherwood Park, just won the Division II Men’s Field Lacrosse Championship playing for the Mercyhurst Lakers.  They beat Adelphi 9 – 8 to win the championship.  Mitch was the Lakers’ number one faceoff man, playing in 14 games and winning 61% of his draws.  Mitch played his minor lacrosse for the Sherwood Park Titans.  He also played for the Sherwood Park Titans Junior B program before moving on to play lacrosse and attend school at The Hill Academy.

This post is about good kids working hard to achieve great things.  Mitch is one of those kids.  He had a goal and people who believed in him were able to assist him in getting to where he is now.  His parents were there giving him support and making sure he was pushed in the right direction.  He is another one of those student-athletes that received excellent advice from Russ Sheppard and was able to play field lacrosse for Russ.  I am pumped for him because he dedicated a lot of time and effort to be a part of this championship.  He also provides Alberta lacrosse with another role model to follow.  Good job Mitch.  That is an amazing achievement.

Highlights of the game are below.
