It was a back and forth affair last night with the Titans coming up with an 11-10 win with two late goals.  The game was an emotional tilt as players and coaches are very familiar with each other.  Players that grew up playing with each other now find themselves on opposite teams.  The competitive fires come up fast as both teams battle for an edge.  Todd Lorenz, one of the Miners coaches, also coaches Jimmy Quinlan as part of the Edmonton Rush.  AJ Jomha, the Miners Head Coach,  coached both myself and Jimmy Quinlan at one time in our playing careers.  The Miners also have six players on their roster that were one time or are currently student-athletes at Vimy Lacrosse.  The web gets very tangled with the two teams.  So you can imagine the turmoil that gets created during a game.

We were on the power play early and often and did not generate the offense that we need with the extra man.  The ball is moving better, but the details are still lacking in our execution.  The Miners battled hard around some good outside shooting and a few nice looks inside.  They also took advantage of our poor pick up play, which resulted in a couple of shorthanded goals.  Those types of goals can be killers to a team.  The Miners also exploited our man down team a few times.  We got into penalty issues in the second and third as we took  penalties that were rightfully deserved.  We need to exhibit better discipline as we can not lose our offensive players to penalties.  We do not have the depth to weather those types of storms.

I will give our guys credit.  They were down late in the game and were able to get the power play to click when it was needed.  It was right to the last moment as Cole Sheen put the game winner in with a few seconds on the clock.  It was definitely a team high.  The Miners are a veteran team with a strong contingent of players in their last year of junior eligibility.  We play them again next Wednesday and I know we have not seen the best of them yet.

Six games in we are 3-2-1.  Good start, better than many expected from us.  Now we need to focus on consistency and knowledge.  We can not make the same mistakes and we need to improve in all areas.

I have put the full game video below for all to view.  We need to spread the word on Junior A lacrosse in Alberta and hopefully some game video allows the public to see the quality of lacrosse being played in their backyard.
