After one period at the Sherwood Park Arena this past Wednesday we were locked in a 0 – 0 tie against the St. Albert Miners.  I have to admit that the way the game was going the thought of a someone getting a shutout crossed my mind.  There was no shutout, but the game was a very low scoring affair with us prevailing 6 – 3.  Our defensive play led by goalie Mike DeGirolamo and the 11 defenders was outstanding.  The Miners had some serious scoring chances in the first period, but after that we were able to basically shut the door on them for the rest of the way.   When we took a penalty, and that was only a couple of times, we were able to limit the possessions and then rag significant time off the penalty.  Our offense sputtered at times and then showed excellent execution.  Mike Kavalinas, the Miners goalie, was solid in net when we were buzzing the Miners’ end.  We were able to get a series of multiple resets and finally broke through with some offense.  In the third period Cole Sheen led the team with goals to stop any Miners momentum and give us the breathing room we needed.  It was a great team effort.

This weekend ahead takes us to Calgary against a struggling Raiders team ready to get their game going and a very confident Mounties team that is leading the standings and has a +41 scoring differential.  The Mounties took it to us hard the last time we were in Calgary so I am hoping the players are focused for a little bit of payback.  Both teams are talented and with Holden Cattoni back from Johns Hopkins, the Raiders offense suddenly got much stronger.  After this weekend we will be halfway completed the regular season.  Goes by fast, got to keep it going.
