titans logo2We knew going into the first game that our team was young and inexperienced up front.  We have some depth on the back end, but overall we have a lot of work ahead of us.  The Miners came out strong and took a lead that they did not give up all night.  We battled back all game, only to take an undisciplined penalty or give up a goal due to a mental mistake.  Give the Miners credit, they played extremely hard and with more intensity on loose balls and the fast break.  Our inability to get a loose ball on defense led to numerous resets.  That just added to their momentum and tired out our defense.  Our offense did not start clicking until it was late in the game and we were chasing the score.  It all ended with a 10 to 9 loss in a game we did not deserve to win based on our effort and execution.  We need to get better.  One of the key areas that was poor last year and we did not address was our fitness level.  That will not be ignored this year.  It became apparent in the latter stages of the game that our conditioning was lacking and that fatigue that was setting in was leading to mistakes.  We have made a commitment to fix that part of our game.

There are things to build upon.  We are gaining a better understanding of our systems and with more dedicated practice we will become more proficient in our execution.   We have good leadership and we have a strong foundation of players.  Unfortunately it is not a long season so players need to become quick studies.  The pressure does not lessen as the Mounties await our arrival in Calgary tomorrow.
