Yesterday the team traveled down to Calgary to take on an experienced Calgary Mounties team.  The Mounties lost to the Raiders last season in the league final and have on their roster some very good returning players and two veteran goalies.  In addition, they picked up fifth year junior Matt Andruchow from the Titans when he asked to be moved down south for his final year of junior.  One of the Mountie’s best player is Dan Taylor, another fifth year junior player who finished his third year playing NCAA Division I lacrosse for the Lehigh Mountain Hawks.  Taylor just finished a great season for the Mountain Hawks, where he put up 47 goals and 29 assists in 17 games.  Those are amazing numbers and in my mind should get him an All American spot.

We were in tough and we started off slowly again.  The defense struggled with the tempo of the Mounties and Mike DeGirolamo was not in sync with the shots he was facing.  We were creating a little bit of offense, but were not a constant threat.  The first period ended with us down 6 to 3 and in desperate need to regroup.  The next two periods the team defense improved dramatically and Degirolamo settled into a groove.  He challenged the shooters with more confidence and trusted the defense around him.  Our offense continued to sputter, but there were some glimpses of strong play.  It was nice to get one of our college players back, Matt Spadafora, as he helped bolster our defense and our faceoff unit.  The team battled hard and did not give up at all over the course of the 60 minutes.  They bent, but did not break.  Hats off to Brett Arsnton, who stepped up to fight one of the Mountie players in the second period.  Not a big fan of the fighting, but it happens and you appreciate the guts it takes to step forward for the challenge.  We know the Mounties are going to be a tough test all year and our objective is to get better and compete for a playoff spot.  That means we need our young players to learn in a hurry and our veterans to provide the leadership we urgently require.

Bonus video below of our full game against the St. Albert Miners played this past Wednesday.  We need to promote the Junior A game so we are providing as much video as possible to share publicly.  Please visit back to see more video in the future.
